Cat-5 COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE

Numerous communities across the country are facing the hard truth that their homes and businesses may be located simply too low in the landscape to survive major flood events. To survive, the entire community must move to higher ground. This note addresses a few of the major challenges to be overcome for the sake of long term security; it will be updated to reflect the evolution of our effort. The images shown below illustrate how our buildings could be laid out in a conventional street plan — each one elevated much higher than any possible flood, built strongly enough face down any possible storm, and insulated to meet the challenges of our volatile weather, whether hotter or cooler..

Elevated Category-5 Iconic models are seen here in a community setting, including 1800, 2400 and 3600 sf options. The goal is to create entire neighborhoods that look and feel like “normal” American developments.

We’re working to create a sense of community and identity for the new developments, using shared architectural features and familiar plantings and landscape designs. The more consistently our design reflects the values of the previous neighborhood, the smoother residents’ transition to the new safe and secure settlement can be.
